Mended Hearts, Inc., Chapter 127 of Cookeville, Tennessee was organized as an affiliate of the national organization, Mended Hearts, Incorporated in 1997 with 25 Charter members.  Cookeville Regional Medical Center (CRMC) paid for charter memberships, with the support of Dr. Martin Coffey, Hospital Administrator.  John Doherty was the first Chapter President and served 4 years until 2001, followed by Dick Armstrong who served until 2003.  Tom Little, is the 3rd and still active President of Chapter 127.

Membership has increased from 25 members to over 250 and is still growing rapidly.  Members actively engage in a variety of support activities.  Their first and foremost effort is to visit and help heart surgical patients and their families during their hospital stay.

Chapter members played a major role in Cookeville's recognition as the "Safest City in the USA" through its AED program.  The Chapter has given nearly 35 AED's so far and has as its goal to give 4 to 5 annually.  Chapter members work with local EMS in training programs.  Normally, a minimum of 12 members from recipient organizations are trained for each AED provided.

Fund-raising projects to purchase AED's include a "Silent Auction" and two "Bake Sales" annually.  Local businesses donate merchandise for the auction while members furnish food, homemade cakes, pies, handmade items and even tasty and popular peanut brittle candy.  Outside supporters often donate items.  Last year, members from one of the rural churches that had received an AED returned the Chapter gift by furnishing many food items.

The Chapter is most active in training its members as Certified Visitors and in supervising the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) Waiting RoomMonthly meetings with speakers from the Cardiology staff of CRMC and other local medical specialists add to the knowledge and health of members.  Refreshments are served at every regular meeting.

The Chapter also sponsors some post-surgery rehabilitation for heart patients following an evaluation by rehab staff when there is a special need for financial support for someone who does not have adequate insurance or is unable to pay.  The Chapter has also helped improve the rehab center through the purchase and donation of additional aerobic exercise equipment.  The Chapter also sponsors a scholarship fund for medical students or trainees.

In addition, the Chapter holds three "pot luck" suppers, a "July picnic" at Cane Creek Park, a December "Christmas Gathering" at a local restaurant, and an "Appreciation Dinner" in recognition of officers and certified visitors.

In July, 2006 Mayor Charles Womack presented the Chapter with a "Special Recognition Certificate" in recognition of its many contributions and services to the city, county, and Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
